Nathan Richards specializes in public and constitutional law with an emphasis on Aboriginal law, appearing before federal and provincial courts and tribunals across Canada. As a member of the Law Society of Ontario and the Barreau du Québec, having completed degrees in the civil and common law traditions of Canada, Nathan brings a national perspective to his clients.

Since 2001, Nathan has served First Nations in Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec, advising on a variety of issues with a focus on Aboriginal title, Aboriginal rights, treaty rights, environmental law, administrative law, and governance. Nathan represents clients before the Federal Courts as well as the courts of Ontario and Quebec.

In addition to his public law practice, Nathan provides advice to clients in respect to civil, commercial, tax and copyright matters.

Nathan was called to the Bar in Quebec in 2001 and in Ontario in 2010. He obtained a Master's degree in 2005 and received his doctorate in 2016, both of which were completed at McGill University in Montreal.

My practice has focused on the litigation and negotiation of claims involving Aboriginal rights, Aboriginal title, and treaty rights. I advise clients on the constitutional duty of consultation and accommodation with respect to significant development projects in their traditional territories.

I specialize in land law applicable to reserves set aside for the use and benefit of First Nations. I advise clients with respect to the interests of members and non-members in reserve lands. I have substantial experience with the implementation of the federal Addition to Reserve policy.

I advise First Nation clients on tax matters, particularly in connection with the statutory tax exemptions of First Nations.

I work closely with First Nations to assist them with the implementation of their inherent right of self-government. I advise First Nation clients on all aspects of governance including the exercise by First Nation Councils of statutory and inherent powers, elections and referenda, administrative agreements, community policing and justice, and land management.

My litigation practice has focused on the judicial review of administrative decisions of ministers of the Crown and statutory tribunals with substantial experience with environmental assessments and project approvals. I have represented clients in proceedings before administrative tribunals.

I advise and represent clients in a range of matters including civil liability, contracts, employment, trusts, and intellectual property. I participate in the drafting of commercial agreements, tenders, leases, as well as publishing contracts.
